Coronavirus Outbreak: Jasprit Bumrah says bowlers need an alternative to saliva for maintaining the ball

Image
Premier India pacer Jasprit Bumrah won't miss the hugs and high-fives as part of a wicket celebration but he will certainly miss applying saliva on the ball and feels an alternative should be provided to maintain the red cherry. The ICC Cricket Committee, led by former India captain Anil Kumble, recommended a ban on using saliva on the ball as an interim measure to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Committee did not allow the use of artificial substances as a substitute move. The new rule makes life tougher for the bowlers and Bumrah, like many former and current fast bowlers, feels there ought to be an alternative. "I was not much of a hugger anyway and not a high-five person as well, so that doesn't trouble me a lot. The only thing that interests me is the saliva bit," said Bumrah in a chat with Ian Bishop and Shaun Pollock on ICC's video series Inside Out. "I don't know what guidelines we'll have to follow when we come back, but I

Firstpost Masterclass: Stance, speed, and solid base, Deep Dasgupta breaks down nuances of wicketkeeping

Image
Editor's note : Professional sport is as much a scientific pursuit as it is a recreational wonder. What appears routinely mundane is a result of the hours spent honing the craft and deciphering the body mechanics till it becomes a monotonous muscle memory. In  Firstpost Masterclass , our latest weekly series, we look at precisely these aspects that make sport a far more intriguing act than we know. Deep Dasgupta grew up idolising Sunil Gavaskar, although his primary role was that of a wicketkeeper. A right-handed batsman, Deep represented India in eight Tests spread across South Africa, India and West Indies in the early 2000s before transitioning into commentary. Deep is regarded as an astute reader of the game, and has made a successful foray in online coaching on his website . Here, he breaks down the technical aspects of wicketkeeping. How did cricket happen to you and what are your earliest memories of the game? I am from the '83 generation; I was six when India won th

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara says Angelo Mathews' injury ahead of 2011 World Cup final was decisive

Image
Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara believes missing Angelo Mathews due to an injury hurt Sri Lanka badly in the summit clash of the 2011 World Cup, which hosts India won after a gap of 28 years. Having played a key role in their thrilling semi-final win against New Zealand, Mathews was forced out of the final against India at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium by a quadriceps muscle injury. Reflecting on the six-wicket loss to India, the former Sri Lankan captain said Mathews' injury forced him to opt for a 6-5 combination and was also the reason behind his decision to bat first after winning the toss. "In that WC final, that's the biggest thing I look back and think...You can talk about drop catches and all of that happens. But the composition of the side and the fact that we were forced to make the change was to me the turning point," Sangakkara said in the latest episode of Instagram series 'Reminisce with Ash' hosted by India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

T20 World Cup 2020 schedule under ‘very high risk’, says Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts

Image
Melbourne : Cricket Australia is bracing for the “very high risk” of the men’s T20 World Cup being postponed and the resulting financial hit during the coronavirus pandemic. Australia is scheduled to host the tournament in October and November but with global travel restrictions in place, it’s very doubtful the event will go ahead. And if it does, it’s unlikely crowds will be allowed in stadiums because of social distancing requirements. “We have been hopeful all along that it could be staged in October-November but you would have to say there’s a very high risk about the prospect of that happening,” Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts said on Friday. Roberts is more confident about a four-Test series against India going ahead, starting at the Gabba in Brisbane on 3 December. But while that would deliver much-needed broadcast revenue, it would also come at a cost of millions for extra “biosecurity measures that we need to put in place to deliver the season." Crick
