David Sheppard, Colin Cowdrey and Learie Constantine were the others who were honoured with House of Lords seats earlier. Botham's most famous moment on the cricket field came in 1981 when he inspired England to a sensational win over Australia in the Ashes. India pacers will not be as effective as Neil Wagner in bowling bouncers, says Australia's Matthew Wade

Image
India's formidable pace attack will not be as effective as New Zealand speedster Neil Wagner in bowling bouncers during their upcoming tour of Australia, feels wicketkeeper Matthew Wade. Wagner bowling a barrage of bouncers and dismissing Australia's three leading batsmen Steve Smith, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne a combined 10 times was one of the rare positives for New Zealand in an otherwise one-sided Test series last season. India are now preparing for a four-Test tour of Australia this summer. "Teams may try it but I don't think it will be as successful," Wade told cricket.com.au . "I don't think anyone in the game has bowled bouncers the way he bowled and been so consistent, and not gotten scored off while also picking up wickets. Eoin Morgan says allowing English players in 2019 IPL was part of World Cup plans

Image
England's limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan has revealed that his teammates' participation in the 2019 IPL, which was part of a well thought out plan, played a key role in helping the side claim its maiden World Cup title. "Playing in IPL was part of Strauss's plan. England vs West Indies: Stuart Broad's 500, Superman Ben Stokes and thank you Windies - reflections from the series

Image
We don’t yet know when normal service will resume in life, but at least we know that this adjusted reality we’re forced to live in will include our dear sport. England completed a perfect turnaround to clinch the last edition of the Wisden Trophy with a 2-1 scoreline – in the process becoming the first team to successfully overturn a deficit in two consecutive Test series – but that’s not the first memory that history books will keep of this contest. For cricket will remember that its pandemic-enforced slumber, a lockdown of 117 days – the longest gap without international cricket since 1970 – wouldn’t have lifted had a bunch of players from the Caribbean agreed to travel, from a largely COVID-safe part of the world to England, a country which was one of the worst-hit by the deadly virus at the time when West Indies team's journey began. All this, while having had to deal with severe pay-cuts along with the unknown future that hovered beyond their tour. On the field, they showed

If something is not done soon, you will see smaller countries playing less, says West Indies captain Jason Holder

West Indies captain Jason Holder feels "relevant" authorities need to ensure that smaller teams get to play regular international cricket as in a world scarred by COVID-19, only India, Australia and England have the resources to stage games in bio-secure bubbles. The cricketing fraternity has lauded the West Indies' decision to tour England amid the pandemic. The three Test-series, which England won 2-1 on Tuesday , marked resumption of international cricket. The series was played in a bio-secure environment increasing organisational costs significantly and Holder said teams like the West Indies are likely to struggle to create a similar environment. "If something doesn't happen soon we'll see less international cricket being played by smaller countries because we simply can't afford it. We've gone from having four, five-match series, down to two and three," Holder said after the conclusion of the third Test. "And it's very difficult

England vs Ireland: ‘You always want to beat England,' visiting captain Andy Balbirnie on rivalry between neighbours

Image
History often plays a key role in determining the intensity of a rivalry, especially when it comes to international sporting events. It holds true for India and Pakistan, especially in sports such as cricket and hockey, as it does for neighbours Ireland and England. Ireland might not be England's fiercest rivals purely from a cricketing perspective, given the latter's history with other teams such as Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, India, etc coupled with the fact that the Irish cricket is still a developing entity. However, given the number of flashpoints in their shared history, including and especially Ireland's struggle for independence from the UK and the subsequent partition of the island, one can understand the satisfaction that Irish fans derive when they beat the 'enemy' in a sporting event, whether rugby, football or cricket. Andy Balbirnie, who will be leading Ireland in the three-ODI series against England that begins on 30 July, agrees with

England vs West Indies: James Anderson and I still have few overs left in us, says Stuart Broad

The latest to join the 500 Test wicket club, England's Stuart Broad finds hard work "addictive" and says there are "a few overs left" in him and his long-time pace colleague, James Andesron. The 34-year-old Broad, who was dropped from the opening Test in Southampton, reached the milestone when he dismissed Kraigg Brathwaite on the fifth day of the deciding third Test against the West Indies here on Tuesday. Broad was one of the stars of England's come-from-behind 2-1 series win. "There's something addictive to that hard work you put in away from the game and on match days that lead to Test match wins," Broad said after the match, according to Sky Sports . "That's why it's so massively satisfying when you win. It's always a special achievement because you go through massive highs and huge lows."
